Evelyn Carter

Artist Statement

For me painting is a dialogue between myself and the canvas.  While I may start with an idea, the creation will flow in its own direction.  Speaking to the canvas with brush in hand, the canvas speaks back, asking questions I must answer.

It is often a fraught process, with only silence at times.  I spend time gazing at what was last painted, coaxing the conversation back.  Often the new conversation takes the work in a new direction.

While I paint to create a work that is aesthetically pleasing, I am moved to create edges that are more honest than beautiful.  Subtracting elements and creating unexpected relationships, I paint to reflect the complexity and destructiveness of contemporary life.  I strive to stretch out of reality, where certain stories can be told.

Artist Bio

Evelyn completed her first painting as a teenager in Wyoming.  Six decades later, she painted her second painting and hasn’t stopped since.   In between the first and second paintings, Evelyn grew up (kind of), completed two degrees, raised a son and daughter, ran marathons and ultra marathons, and worked for thirty plus years as a financial advisor.  Retirement from the business world has opened an opportunity for Evelyn to expand her creative interests and to express herself through form and color.  She finds inspiration hiking in the mountains and driving along the back roads of New Mexico as well as through current political and social events.
