Amelia (Mellie) Myer

Oil, Acrylic

Artist Statement

I’m Amelia Myer but my friends call me Mellie, and I hope you do too. For almost 20 years, painting has been my way of paying attention. I paint representational landscapes in oil and abstracts in acrylic—the oils as a way of observing the world and the abstracts as the world experienced. I have found that the presence and deep attention required to paint is a form of meditation that sharpens my awareness and perception of the natural world and my place in it. I am especially interested in the drama and energy beneath the stillness of our landscape in this part of the world. In oils, I try to follow the landscape closely, guided by light moving across the New Mexico high desert. In acrylic, I let the same landscape come apart and reassemble in angular forms and with bolder colors.

Biography

Amelia (Mellie) Myer has had a lifetime interest in drawing and painting and has devoted the past twenty years to landscape painting, both as a skill and a tool for personal and spiritual development. She has a degree in journalism and history, was a newspaper reporter and news editor, taught journalism in the Peace Corps in West Africa, was a public information officer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and then spent 20 years as a nonprofit director. Through her working life she took art classes, self-taught in a variety of media, and finally settled primarily on oil landscapes and more recently on acrylic abstracts.

Mellie has been a member artist with The Gallery ABQ for four years and has shown her art in many art shows and venues in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, winning several awards including at Masterworks of New Mexico, the New Mexico State Fair and the Gallery ABQ. She has served as a board member for Gallery ABQ and New Mexico Art League. She is currently most interested in painting abstract acrylic landscapes, breaking down the landforms into angular and fractured planes and using bold colors.

I have had a lifetime interest in drawing and painting, and in the past several years have devoted much of my time to art classes and painting, both as a skill and a tool for personal and spiritual development.

I have found that the presence and deep attention required to paint is a form of meditation that sharpens my awareness and perception of both the natural world and my place in it.

I began my art journey twenty five years ago with pastels, but in recent years have been most interested in landscapes in oils. I also paint large abstracts in acrylic.

I have shown work at Gallery ABQ, New Mexico Art League, Matrix Gallery, Studio J, MasterWorks of New Mexico 2016-2024, Encantada!, New Mexico State Fair, NMCC Gallery With a Cause, St. Michael's Gallery.

I've won awards as NM State Fair, MasterWorks of New Mexico and Gallery ABQ.
